The Pézize: A Landmark of the ECHO III – Wandering Arts Caravan

Architecture in the spotlight

The Pézize is an architectural construction that plays with notions of inside and outside, utilizing transparencies, thresholds, and the specific characteristics of perforated volumes. A multidirectional network hollows out the space, creating an interior circuit around various patios and walkways. This innovative design allows the internal space to merge seamlessly with the external environment, generating a unique and disorienting architectural experience.

Inaugurated in June 2019 in Maignaut Tauzia (Gers) at the invitation of the Artothèque de Gondrin and with the Maignaut Passion association, the Pézize has captivated audiences with its intriguing form and function.

The Interplay of Inside and Outside

The volume of the Pézize is sculpted by openings made in a basic solid, the octahedron. This multidirectional network creates a circuit around patios and walkways, resulting in a subtle interplay of transparency and threshold. Visitors often find their bearings challenged as their eyes wander through the dynamic spaces. Dynamorphe, the creator of this structure, has succeeded in merging interior and exterior spaces, providing a disconcerting yet fascinating architectural experience.

The Pézize and Our Caravan Tour

The Pézize served as the main landmark of our Caravan Tour, drawing audiences to the performances. Inside the Pézize, visitors had the opportunity to experience a multimedia exhibition of the four Art Residencies that took place during Winter 2023 in Athens, Bucharest, Sofia, and Tirana. The exhibition featured moments from various performing arts—including theatre, music, poetry, and visual arts—highlighting gender roles, social norms, and the lasting influence of traditions and ancestors.

Practical Considerations

Before Using the Pézize

Certain permissions are necessary for installing the inflatable structure, including those from any agency overseeing the installation site. It is strongly advised to set up the inflatable in a space with a nearby indoor facility in case of inclement weather. While rain or mild wind does not affect the inflatable, strong winds can hinder its installation. Therefore, choosing a location that offers some protection from strong winds, such as between buildings or trees or at a low altitude, is recommended.

After the Experience of the Pézize

Despite the demanding process of installing and dismantling the Pézize, it successfully attracted a large audience, especially children, which posed a challenge. Constant supervision was required to prevent children from running inside the structure. Additionally, the high visitor turnout led to some chaos, as only 20 people could enter at a time.

A Unique Symbol of Our Tour

Overall, the experience with the Pézize was unique and unforgettable. It became the symbol of our Caravan Tour, embodying the spirit of exploration and the fusion of art and architecture. Despite the challenges, the Pézize’s ability to draw and engage audiences made it an invaluable part of our tour, leaving a lasting impression on all who visited.
