Description

Golem Grad, a.k.a. Snake island, is home to several ancient ruins and churches, as well as to several different animal species, especially snakes. The island is currently uninhabited, and has been so since the mid-20th century, when the small monastic community left. In August 2008, the island opened to tourists. It can be reached only by boat. The closest village to the island is Konjsko, about 2 kilometers of water away. During our visit there, we had a lot of luck in not encountering snakes. The only snake that we saw was when we were leaving, and trust me, it was as huge as it can be, and obviously poisonous. It was so well camouflaged that it looked like it was merging with the leaves and branches around it. From that point of view and with my little imagination, I made a choice to create this artwork as the snake was part of nature and plants. Djoshkun Alievski
