It’s been two amazing musical weeks since ECHO Music Academy in Bitola kicked off. As part of the ECHO Academies, which tries to nurture young and emerging talents from across Europe, this academy has chosen the enchanting backdrop of Bitola, North Macedonia, to embark on a journey into the world of traditional music and heritage.
The Academy opened its doors with the musicians engaged in a lively icebreaking session, fostering connections and bonds. Following this, a comprehensive introduction to the whole ECHO Academies initiative and Bitola’s rich cultural heritage set the stage for what promises to be a transformative experience.
Captivating masterclasses led by Ethnochoreologist Mcs Ljupka Stefanovska took place in the Academy. With profound insights into the ethnology and folk music of the Bitola region, the artists were transported into the heart of North Macedonia’s musical heritage. Traditional ritual songs echoed through the academy, setting the tone for the weeks to come.
Another remarkable moment was the deep dive into the traditional musical instruments of North Macedonia. Goran Angelov led an illuminating masterclass, introducing the artists to the mesmerising world of folk instruments. From tambourines to flutes, the academy resonated with the enchanting sounds of these age-old treasures.
Later on the same week the musicians engaged in mentoring sessions with Katerina Popovska, where they brainstormed pilot project ideas. These sessions sparked creativity and ignited a sense of purpose as our artists began to envision how they could contribute to preserving and promoting North Macedonia’s musical traditions. University Professor Vera Miloshevska Josifovska, who is also a member of the renowned Ljubojna band guided the participants, and by her guidance the artists immersed themselves in the soul-stirring melodies and poignant lyrics that have been passed down through generations. The artists had the chance to explore the stories and emotions embedded in every note and every verse.
Sasho Popovski led an inspiring masterclass that unveiled the global dimensions of music and its profound connection with traditions. Through a captivating exploration of diverse musical cultures from around the world, our artists discovered how traditions intertwine and evolve across borders. The day was a testament to the academy’s commitment to fostering a glocal (global + local) perspective on heritage, opening doors to new horizons for these emerging talents.
