ECHO III – For Memory’s Sake | Wandering Arts Caravan, 20 – 28 September

The echoes of the Wandering Arts Caravan of ECHO III – For Memory’s Sake continue to resonate as we look back on an unforgettable journey that united Balkan cultures through art and exploration. This remarkable caravan, which brought together a diverse group of talented Balkan artists, embarked on a mission to delve into the heart of Balkan heritage and the concept of arranged marriages. The result was a series of six parallel performances within the inflatable installation called “Pezize”, symbolising our commitment to pushing artistic boundaries.

Bucharest: Where Dreams Become Reality

The journey began in Bucharest on 20 September, marking a moment that felt like a distant dream which had turned into a mesmerising reality. In Bucharest, the caravan celebrated arranged marriages through a blend of theatre, screenings, music, poetry, and the immersive Pezize exhibition. This unique experience captivated the Balkan audience, revealing the intriguing differences and striking similarities among Balkan cultures. It was a profound realisation of how shared experiences and memories can bind us together, even as our sounds and customs harmonise and stand out.

Vidin: A Fairytale Stop

The enchantment continued in Vidin, Bulgaria, a place straight out of a fairytale. Time seemed to have stood still, and the warmth and joy radiating from the people added to the magic of the evening. The enchanting venue transported the audience to a bygone era, creating an unforgettable experience. Our gratitude goes out to everyone who made this evening truly magical.

Sofia: Bridging Differences

In Sofia, the caravan had the privilege of performing in front of a large and diverse audience. The park, where the main stage was set, became a hub of activity, and the Pezize installation drew even more visitors. Here, we celebrated our commonalities and differences with the audience, engaging in discussions about the concept of arranged marriages. These conversations brought fresh insights for both the artists and the ECHO III team. We extend our warmest thanks to Sofia for its openness and enthusiasm.

Ioannina: Rainy Resilience and Heartwarming Moments

Rainy Ioannina presented its challenges, leading to a change of plans and a performance in a small, last-minute theatre in the city. However, this shift in circumstances did not dampen the magic of the performance, thanks to the invaluable assistance of Athina and Theatre Actina. The night was not only amazing and cosy but also included special guests.

What made this performance truly exceptional was the presence of 10 refugees from the Agia Eleni camp, who had the chance to watch our performance. Their post-performance comment, “We may not have understood everything, but the opportunity to see the city of Ioannina and listen to music makes us feel grateful – thank you!” filled our hearts with joy and happiness.

Berat: Confidence and Calmness

The performance in Berat took place in the courtyard of the town hall, creating an atmosphere of a modern wedding that unfolded in the town hall, with the artists being the “newlyweds” and the audience the guests.

Lushnje: A Finale of Artistic Revelation

The final stop of the ECHO III Caravan Tour brought us to Lushnje, Albania, where our artistic journey reached its zenith. Lushnje, often referred to as the “Land of Eagles,” provided the perfect setting for a grand finale of artistic revelation and cultural exploration.

In Lushnje, the Pezize installation came to life once again, this time with a sense of culmination and reflection. The artists, now deeply connected to Balkan heritage and the concept of arranged marriages, poured their hearts into their performances, creating a crescendo of artistic expression that left a lasting impression on all who attended. It was the most moving performance!

The ECHO III Caravan Tour may have come to an end, but the memories and experiences it created will continue to live on, guiding us forward in our artistic pursuits and cultural explorations.
