Exploring the relations between the elements that create a space which serves as a backdrop to a traumatic event, my artwork titled “Surface” is a piece that through direct interaction questions the level of desensitisation of society towards violence. Engaging the senses in a combined way through a stylised form, the experience of existing in and experiencing a scene of a crime, in this case a frozen surface of a river, is moved to the center of the artistic expression.

Analysing the archive material of the event, I was inspired by the harsh banality of brutality and dehumanization so I wanted to create a piece that would bring the audience closer to the state of mind of the victims while they were standing in the row, waiting to be executed. Such dialogue requires a certain level of retraumatization whose purpose is to encourage awareness and opinion about the importance and severity of the event.
